Custom POS Displays Australia: Floor, Counter, Dump Bin or Pallet Display?

Choosing between a floor display, counter unit, dump bin, pallet display or shelf display can shape how easily shoppers notice, understand and access a product in-store. The best format is not simply the largest or most colourful option. It is the display that fits the product, allocated retail space, campaign goal, replenishment plan and delivery requirements.

For Australian brands, retailers, distributors and marketing agencies, custom cardboard displays offer a flexible way to support product launches, seasonal promotions, limited editions and sales campaigns. They can be customised in different shapes, sizes and colours, with printed branding and campaign messages incorporated into the structure.cardboarddisplay.com+1

This guide explains the main types of custom POS displays available in Australia, where each format works best and what information to prepare before requesting a quote.

What is a custom POS display?

A custom point-of-sale display, commonly called a POS display, is a purpose-designed unit used to present products or promotional material in a retail or commercial environment. Depending on the campaign, it may sit on a checkout counter, stand independently on the shop floor, fit within shelving or hold a bulk quantity of stock on a pallet footprint.

Unlike a generic fixture, a custom POS display is planned around the product and campaign. Its dimensions, structure, graphics, access points and stock capacity can be matched to the items being displayed and the way a retailer expects customers or staff to use it.

Cardboard Displays supplies custom solutions and standing templates for Australian businesses, with formats including counter displays, floor displays, dump bins, pallet displays, gravity-feed units, brochure stands and shelf or speciality displays.cardboarddisplay.com+1

Quick format guide

Counter displays for smaller products

A cardboard counter display is usually the best option when products are compact, easy to pick up and suited to a checkout, service desk or other countertop. Common uses include samples, cosmetics, confectionery, accessories, gift cards and small packaged items.

Counter displays can be customised with branding, product information and promotional messaging. Their freestanding design also allows retailers to move them to a suitable counter position when store layouts or campaign priorities change.cardboarddisplay.com

Before choosing a counter unit, confirm:

• The available counter width, depth and height

• The dimensions and weight of each product

• The number of products required per facing

• Whether products will sit in trays, pockets or separate compartments

• Whether staff need easy access for replenishment

• Whether the header could obstruct the customer’s view or the checkout process

A counter display should be compact enough for the available space but large enough to hold a practical amount of stock. If frequent refilling will be difficult, a floor display may be a better choice.

Floor displays for featured ranges

A cardboard floor display is a freestanding unit that can create a dedicated destination for a product or campaign. It may include shelves, trays, hooks, pockets or a combination of these features.

Floor displays suit product launches, seasonal offers, limited editions and featured ranges. Cardboard Display advises considering the product size, display dimensions, branding, logo placement, colour scheme and intended in-store position when selecting or customising a floor unit.cardboarddisplay.com

A floor display may be appropriate when:

• The campaign needs visibility beyond the existing shelf

• Several products or variants must appear together

• The range needs more capacity than a counter display can provide

• The retailer has allocated a defined freestanding space

• The unit needs printed panels for campaign storytelling

The structural brief should state the total loaded weight, not just the weight of one item. Product weight, shelf span and the number of units per shelf all influence the display configuration. Supplying an actual product sample can also help the design team assess fit, access and stability.

Dump bins for loose or bulk stock

A cardboard dump bin is an open display designed to hold multiple items in a contained area. It is useful for promotional products, seasonal items, limited editions, clearance stock and products that shoppers can browse without needing a strict shelf arrangement.cardboarddisplay.com

Dump bins can work well for lightweight packaged products, soft goods, toys and other items that do not need individual facings. They can also be customised in different sizes and shapes and printed to align with the campaign.cardboarddisplay.com

Before selecting a dump bin, consider:

• Whether the products can be stacked or mixed safely

• Whether shoppers can reach products near the bottom

• How the display will look as stock levels fall

• The total weight when the bin is fully loaded

• Whether dividers or a false base are required

• How staff will replenish and relocate the display

A dump bin should make the offer easy to browse without allowing the presentation to become confusing. If product variants need to remain clearly separated, a shelved floor display or compartmented counter unit may work better.

Pallet displays for high-volume promotions

Pallet displays are intended for campaigns that require substantial stock capacity or a strong presence in a larger retail environment. They are often considered for supermarkets, warehouse-style stores and other locations where bulk merchandising is appropriate.

Cardboard Displays offers pallet display solutions and Australia-wide delivery, with customisation available for different retail and business requirements. A pallet campaign may also use printed surrounds, trays, stacked cartons or a purpose-built display structure, depending on how the stock will be transported and presented.cardboarddisplay.com

Confirm these points before briefing a pallet display:

• Full, half or quarter-pallet footprint

• Product carton dimensions and total loaded weight

• Retailer height and footprint restrictions

• Whether the display arrives pre-packed or is assembled in-store

• Forklift and pallet-jack access requirements

• Transport stability and distribution method

• Replenishment access once the unit is on the shop floor

Retailer approval is particularly important. A design that works in a warehouse or showroom may not satisfy the operational requirements of a supermarket or national retail network.

Gravity-feed displays for consistent fronting

A gravity-feed display uses angled channels so products move forward as the front item is removed. It can be useful for consistently sized packaged products where front-facing presentation and simple customer access are priorities.

Cardboard Displays produces custom gravity-feed floor displays as part of its Australian display range. This format is generally most suitable when product dimensions are consistent and the packaging can travel through the channel without catching.cardboarddisplay.com

A gravity-feed brief should include a physical product sample or highly accurate measurements. The design team may need to assess packaging shape, friction, channel width, product weight and the angle required for reliable movement.

Shelf and speciality displays

Shelf displays work within existing retail shelving rather than creating a separate freestanding fixture. They may help define a product range, hold stock in a set arrangement or provide additional campaign branding near the product.

Cardboard Displays manufactures custom shelf and speciality displays for Australian businesses. This category is useful when the retailer has already allocated shelf space or when a standard floor or counter format does not suit the product.cardboarddisplay.com

Measure the exact available width, depth and height before design begins. Shelf dimensions, shelf-edge labels, adjacent products and replenishment access should all be considered in the brief.

Pegboard and hook displays

Pegboard or hook displays suit products supplied in hanging packs, particularly when multiple SKUs need to appear in an organised vertical arrangement. Possible applications include accessories, tools, stationery, small toys and packaged components.

The Cardboard Displays pegboard range can support colour blocking, related-product grouping and different product arrangements, while leaving unused space where a less crowded presentation is preferable.cardboarddisplay.com

The design brief should specify:

• Pack dimensions and weight

• Hang-hole type and position

• Hook length and quantity

• Required spacing between rows

• Number of SKUs and facings

• Whether the display needs storage or replenishment stock

How to choose the right POS display

The right custom POS display should be chosen by working through six practical factors.

Product size and shape

Measure the product at its widest, deepest and tallest points. If the packaging is irregular, flexible or rounded, a sample is more reliable than nominal measurements alone.

Total loaded weight

Calculate the weight of every product that will sit on the display at full capacity. Structural design must account for shelves, trays, hooks and concentrated loads.

Stock quantity

Decide how many units, SKUs and facings the display needs. A larger unit is not always more effective if it creates empty space or makes replenishment difficult.

Store location

A display near the checkout has different space and visibility requirements from a unit at the entrance, in an aisle or within existing shelving. Cardboard Display specifically recommends considering where a floor unit will sit in-store when choosing its design.cardboarddisplay.com

Campaign duration

Short seasonal campaigns, product launches and promotional windows may have different requirements from long-term installations. The campaign period can influence the preferred material, print treatment, replaceable graphics and required durability.

Shopper interaction

Consider whether customers will pick products from a shelf, reach into a bin, remove a hanging pack or take information from a brochure pocket. Product access should feel intuitive, while replenishment should remain practical for store staff.

What to include in a custom display brief

A detailed brief can reduce uncertainty and help the display supplier recommend an appropriate format. Include:

• Product name, category and use

• Product dimensions and unit weight

• Total loaded weight

• Number of SKUs and quantity per display

• Desired display type, if known

• Intended store position

• Available floor, counter or shelf space

• Retailer specifications or approval requirements

• Number of stores and display quantity

• Campaign launch and delivery dates

• Delivery locations across Australia

• Artwork, brand guidelines and mandatory messaging

• Assembly and packing preferences

• Sustainability or disposal requirements

• Photos, samples or examples of the preferred style

If the display format is not known, start with the product, stock quantity, retail environment and campaign objective. Cardboard Displays has standing templates and custom options, which allows the team to consider an existing structure or a more tailored solution.cardboarddisplay.com+1

How early should a custom POS display be ordered?

Allow enough time for briefing, structural design, quotation, artwork, sampling or prototyping, approvals, production, packing and freight. The exact schedule will depend on the complexity, quantity, print requirements and delivery locations, so the safest approach is to contact the supplier as early as possible.

This is especially important for Australia’s end-of-year promotional period. In 2026, Black Friday falls on 27 November and Cyber Monday follows on 30 November, while retailers may begin related promotions earlier. Brands planning Christmas, Boxing Day or New Year activity should also consider whether one display can use replaceable messages or graphics across more than one campaign.business.vic.gov+1

Avoid waiting until finished artwork is available before discussing the structure. Product dimensions, weight and retail-space requirements can be reviewed first, allowing structural planning and creative development to progress in a sensible order.

Cardboard or permanent display materials?

Cardboard displays are particularly well suited to promotional, seasonal and limited-duration campaigns. They are lightweight, customisable and printable, and selected Cardboard Displays products are described as easy to assemble and suitable for Australia-wide shipping.cardboarddisplay.com+1

A more permanent material may be worth considering when the display will remain in use for an extended period, experience frequent relocation or carry heavy products under demanding conditions. Cardboard Display also offers custom metal display stands for promotions, shows and expos where that format better suits the application.cardboarddisplay.com

The correct choice depends on the product, environment, expected lifespan and logistics. A supplier should assess these details rather than recommending one material for every campaign.

Planning displays across Australia

Campaigns delivered to multiple Australian states need a distribution plan as well as a display design. Confirm whether units will be delivered flat-packed, assembled, pre-packed with stock or sent to a central warehouse for onward distribution.

Cardboard Displays states that it ships relevant display products Australia-wide, including to Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and interstate locations. When requesting a quote, provide the postcode, quantity and delivery method for each destination so freight and packing requirements can be assessed accurately.cardboarddisplay.com+2

National rollouts should also account for different store layouts. A modular approach or more than one display size may be useful when metropolitan flagships, shopping-centre stores and smaller regional locations have different space allocations.

End-of-year POS display checklist

Before approving an end-of-year display, confirm:

• The campaign launch date and required in-store date

• The correct retailer footprint and height restrictions

• Product samples or verified product dimensions

• Full loaded weight and stock capacity

• Number of stores and units required

• Artwork approval responsibilities

• Assembly, packing and replenishment method

• Freight destinations and delivery contacts

• Whether messaging must change between Black Friday, Christmas and Boxing Day

• How the unit will be recycled or disposed of after the campaign

A well-prepared brief allows the structure, artwork and logistics to support the same goal: presenting the right product clearly in the right retail space.
